Computer Science Week

The Hour of Code is a global event designed to celebrate Computer Science Education Week. Each year, during this time, students around the world are challenged to learn the basics of coding. Children have the opportunity to learn coding which celebrates Computer Science Education Week. All Children in grades three to five are given the opportunity to learn “Block coding” using our computers.

During Computer Science Week, Ms. Tricomi welcomed a Google Volunteer into her 5th Grade Technology classroom.

Mr. Huang, a Google Volunteer, delivered a one-hour lesson to Class 5-509 aimed at inspiring students and sharing insights into roles in computer science.

Technology in the Classroom

PS 197 has been very fortunate to have received RESO A grants and school funding to be able to purchase:  

  • Promethean and document projectors for every classroom.
  • Class sets of Chromebooks in the upper grades and class sets of iPads in the lower grades.
  • Laptops for all teachers and service providers.   
  • Mobile Chromebook carts and iPad carts for class use.

Internet and Group Work

Technology is infused through daily lessons with the use of BrainPop, BrainPop Jr., EdVista, Raz Kidz, Learning without Tears, Lexia English, IXL, Cognimoves, Epic, Sora, and Quaver PE. These web sites offer animated and curriculum-based content that engages students, supports educators, and bolsters achievement.

In all content areas, our Promethean Boards offer students opportunities to have shared experiences around learning. They offer teachers and students opportunities to access the internet for resources that enhance teaching and learning for our students. Students have interactive experiences with our smart boards that allow them to engage in learning an many new and exciting ways.
